Qigong, also known as 'acupuncture through movement', is one of the best-kept secrets of Chinese Medicine. In terms of Chinese Medicine, Qigong is superior to acupuncture for those who are able and willing to practice it.
Medical research supports the use of Qigong in treating symptoms of cancer, PTSD, stress, depression, diabetes, drug addiction, fibromyalgia, mild traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, dementia, arthritis, and other common conditions that afflict the elderly.
Fragrant Qigong Level 1 consists of primarily gentle arm movements. Fragrant Qigong Level 2 adds gentle hip movement combined with arm movements. Level 1 is said to be for health and Level 2 for longevity. It is recommended that Level 2 not be practiced until Level 1 has been practiced for at least three months. (Level 2 should be practiced right after practicing Level 1.)
Fragrant Qigong can be practiced several times a day to speed up the healing process or just once a day to maintain health and wellness.
Fragrant Qigong (Xiang Gong) is one of the most popular forms of qigong in China. It is so popular because it is so easy to do and because it is so effective.
Fragrant Qigong does not require any special breathing or mind techniques and can be done while watching the TV or talking. Level 1 can be practiced standing, seated, or lying down and is practical for people of any age and almost any physical condition.
Fragrant Qigong targets the body's entire energy system by balancing it, opening it up, and filling it in. Fragrant Qigong also provides the practitioner with a strong sense of grounding.
When I practice Fragrant Qigong, I feel a strange tingling sensation in my lower legs and in my hands. At the end of doing Fragrant Qigong, my legs feel like they are made of concrete, as if they are tree trunks growing out of the ground -- a very strange sensation indeed! There are several movements in Fragrant Qigong where I can tell how I'm doing that day by whether or not I resist some of the movements or by how long it takes me to enter a balanced state. When I finish doing Fragrant Qigong I feel pleasant, centered, and calm.
I must admit that I do not enjoy meditation or yoga. I'm aware of the benefits of each. I had some success meditating for a time several years ago. I've tried yoga and quickly decided that it wasn't for me. Fortunately for me, I find that qigong provides the benefits of meditation and yoga, but with much less struggle on my part. It's easier for me to focus on the fluid movements of qigong than to let go in the stillness of meditation or yoga.
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, I notice when I do Fragrant Qigong that if some of my muscles or joints are tight they slowly release when I practice. Sometimes I even feel like there are small chiropractic adjustments being performed on me when I practice. I feel and hear tiny clicks in my body initially, but they disappear by the time I'm finished. It's an unusual, but wonderful sensation!
The benefits of qigong increase over time. You can feel the benefits of qigong right away. It's best to practice daily to build up your energy over time. Over time you will feel more and more balanced and grounded, and your overall health will improve as well.
